    Replacing the Startup Logo

    The startup screen displayed while waiting for you to log on can easily be changed by replacing the file C:\WinNT\winnt256.bmp on NT machines and C:\Windows\win256.bmp on Win9x machines. At work I have changed these to display our corporate logo.

    Nicer Shutdown Screen

    On Windows 95/98 machines, after shutting down a screen is displayed saying "You can now turn off the machine". Consequently, users were approaching a computer and turning them off, in order to turn them on again to use them. This shutdown screen is the file C:\Windows\logo.sys and I edited it here to add the words "or press ctrl-alt-delete to restart".

    Exporting (saving) Outlook address book

    It can be useful to be able to extract the email addresses stored in Outlook's address book, for example, to take them somewhere else, or to email them even! This is how to do it:
  • 1) File->Import and Export...
  • 2) Action to perform: Import from another program or file
  • 3) File type to import from: Personal Address Book
  • 4) Select destination folder: Contacts
  • 5) Confirm with: Finish
  • 6) File->Import and Export...
  • 7) Action to perform: Export to a file
  • 8) Create type of file: Comma seperated variables
  • 9) Select folder to export from: Contacts
  • 10) Save as exported file: select a file
  • 11) Map Custom Fields...
  • 12) Remove everything from righthand list except those items you want to export. I only export First Name and Email Address. Then OK
  • 13) Confirm with: Finish
  • 14) Delete the Contacts list within Outlook
