It could be various things. The only cases I've witnessed where transfer
initially went ok, but failed after a couple of bytes, was when the cable
was not made up correctly. Have you made it exactly as according to the
specs in the XFer docs? (The cable is special, since the software does extra
an handshake for reliability.)

If you're using Win95, you could try to use another version of XFer. XFer 3
and 4 should both work.

If that doesn't work, it might be an OS/hardware problem on the PC.
