Sheffield Star, 12-Feb-2001, p8, The Diary Asidelines: In hirsute of the beards AND now Beardwatch, a razor-sharp investigation into facial fungus on Sheffield Council. There do seem to be an awful lot of beards about. Liberal Democrats and Labour can muster seven Bearded Ones apiece... and that's just the men. The Lib Dems are headed by leader Peter Moore, followed by David Baker, Jonathan Harston, Duncan Kime, John Knight, Terry McElligott and Colin Ross. Labour can boast (if that's the right word) Tony Damms, Bill Eddison, Ilyas Khan, Steve Jones, Mike King, Mohammed Nazir and Ken Saunders. And we shouldn't forget Trefor Morgan, the sole Liberal, whose beard seems to come and go, and Independant Labour member Ron Shepherd. That makes 16. In higher politics, Labour beards include ministers David Blunkett and Richard Caborn, as well as Bill Michie, MP for Sheffield Heeley, and Lib Dem MP Richard Allan. In fact the only Sheffield MP who hasn't is Helen Jackson (Hillsborough). Nor should we forget bearded council chief executive Bob Kershaw. Is there a much deeper significance to all this, the Diary wonders? ---- JGH: Kershaw? It's Kerslake!
