Parameters: The pathname to EARS components (data directory, etc) is restricted to 40 characters. This means on our system I have to SUBST a fake drive to a deep path to get EARS to work, as otherwise, the path is truncated to: G:\Cex\Members\LibDem\Resources\EARS\ShData Additionally, you cannot abandon the pathname editing dialogue until you have either created a non-existant directroy, or entered an existing directory. You cannot abandon an edit /without/ creating a directory, you get stuck in a loop of "close -> directory does not exist, do you want to create it -> no -> close -> directory does not exist, do you want to create it". Also, EARS expands /and/ /stores/ /the/ /expansion/ of each path. EARS should only store the full path if it is /not/ inside the EARS application directory. It should just store the relative path from the application directory if the path is inside the application directory. For instance, on our system, EARS is on Drive S:. I have to be very careful editing parameters otherwise EARS stores the data path as "S:\EARS\Shef\Data08" instead of "Data08". That means that when it is copied onto a branch machine on drive C: it falls over saying drive S: not found. Backup: Configure to give default filename of yy-mm-dd, not dd-mm-yy, so files are correctly sorted; also yy-mm-dd-lll where lll is the licence number, not lll-*, as it is more useful to have backups grouped by date, not by licence number. TPS Export: Wait until I select OK! TPS export executes immediately and doesn't give the user a chance to interact with the dialogue. Stats: When printing stats for a group of PDs, list the PD name as well as the code. "ZA BOLE HILL 712" is a lot easier to understand than "ZA 712", Canvass Stats: "Total canvassed" is a lot more useful figure than "Uncanvassed". Can we have a "total canvassed" column, please Percentages for each canvass column, ie: DEF PROB 208 14.5% 165 9.2% etc. Similarly, an option to export as CSV with the percentages as formulas, ie: ZA,BOLE HILL,208,=C1/P1,165,=E1/P1,etc... Ability to save bar charts to text file. It was really useful in EARS 7 being able to redirect the printer to a file, and then "print" all the bar charts to a file. Polling district name as well as code on bar chart display and printout Filter and range on bar chart display and printout Printing: Printing labels - ability to print filter/range at top of each page, just off the top of the top row of labels on a standard sheet of labels. Filters: Wider drop-down list for filters. I end up having to guess which of several truncated names is the one I want. Display "multi" or "all-house" at the *end* of the name, not the beginning I don't care that it's a multi filter, I just care which filter it is. Prefixing the names bumps the list out and makes it harder to scan down. A single filter able to filter on "any survey flag set" instead of having to build an eight-fold multi-filter Let me delete the "SHUTTLEWORTH" filter!!!! Search: Ctrl-S for 'F'ind? It should be Ctrl-F. Or at least label it "Search" :) When using EARS I keep Ctrl-F for the first few tries before I remember. After using EARS for a time, I then start pressing Ctrl-S in Word to try and find something! Ability to abort a search while its searching, rather than wait ages for it to find nobody. Ability to search by telephone number "Rebuild search index" often pops the "Done" box /behind/ other windows meainging you can't click on it as it you don't know it's there, and you can't close other windows while it is waiting. Export: Ability to write an Export format that gives fixed width output fields, eg: Fred Smith 108 High Street Mytown MT1 2DW Julia Smith 108 High Street Mytown MT1 2DW Ability to export unfiltered voted and PV status, eg: ZA,101,PV,VOTED,Fred,Smith ZA,102,PV,,Julia,Smith ZA,103,,VOTED,Andrew,Smith There should be an 'Export' button on the main screen. Everybody keeps forgetting you have to select "letters" to export data - very counter-intuitive. Elector Data: Elector 'known as' field, so Brenda gets letters addressed to 'Lynne' Editing: Ability to copy data to the clipboard, particulalrly address data. It gets quite annoying checking in EARS for, eg somebody's address or postcode, and then having to manually type it into another document character by character. Bug: If you select a filter with an "=" in it, the "max names" number gets set to it, eg filter is "SURVEY=BUSES", max names becomes "BUSES=2"
