Also, former editor Nuala Buffini was so pleased with the Waro (from Devil Goblins From Neptune) that she asked Day and Topping to bring them back in a future novel, apparently titled Setting Suns: The Return Of The Waro. However, whether current editor Steve Cole is interested in the creatures' return is unknown, and Day and Topping have yet to even finish a plot outline for the novel, let alone seek a formal commission. * Catastrophea sees the return of the Draconians * Frobisher will indeed be the companion in David A McIntee's Sixth Doctor novel Mission: Impractical. After permission to include the shape-shifting Whifferdill (who habitually appeared as a penguin) was granted by both Steve Cole and Doctor Who Magazine editor Gary Gillatt, higher powers within the BBC threatened to block Frobisher's use, but this situation has now been resolved. Definitely appearing in Mission: Impractical are Sabalom Glitz and his partner, Dibber, as well as the Veltrochni, the Ogrons and a Tzun. * The Wirrrn and Foamasi return in Placebo Effect, as do Stacy Townsend and the Ice Warrior Ssard, the Eighth Doctor's companions in Russell's Radio Times comic strip. * Zeta Major is a sequel to Planet Of Evil. * The Scarlet Empress sees the return of Iris Wildthyme, a character from Paul Magrs' short story in Short Trips, in an Arabian Nights-type adventure. * Chris Boucher, scriptwriter of The Face Of Evil, The Robots Of Death and Image Of The Fendahl is the author of September's Last Man Running. * Matrix focuses around the Whitechapel murders. * The Infinity Doctors will celebrate Doctor Who's thirty-fifth anniversary and according to Lance Parkin is "a Paul McGann Missing Adventure with a twist." The story is set on Gallifrey, and features the return of unspecified "old faces", including one from a previous Parkin novel. * The Seventh Doctor Handbook does in fact cover both the Seventh and Eighth Doctors. Due to licensing arrangements (and an unwillingness to modify the cover design for the last volume of the series), however, the Eighth Doctor does not appear in any way on the front cover, though he is mentioned on the back. * Five Rounds Rapid is the autobiography of Nicholas Courtney (Brigadier Lethrbidge-Stewart). * Plans to have Sam Jones appear on the cover of a BBC novel have reportedly been shelved when, after several attempts to include her on front and back covers, Steve Cole finally decided she didn't look right. Her image may still be used in promotional materials, however. * Paul Cornell had hoped to feature Bernice Summerfield in a BBC Books novel, but this idea has been nixed by higher powers within the BBC. * Much like 1997, there will be no December 1998 releases from BBC Books * Wages Of Sin is a historical set in during the last days of Rasputin, and was originally written for the First Doctor. * Autumn Mist is set around Bastogne in December 1944 and described by McIntee as "sort of Kelly's Heroes meets The X-Files. * Amongst the Eighth Doctor novels slated to appear in 1999 is Revolution Man by Paul Leonard, which takes place in the 1960s and is about "flower power, drugs, telekinesis and for a change no aliens". * Philip Segal and Gary Russell will team up to pen the long-anticipated Doctor Who: Regeneration, a hardcover which will painstakingly detail the making of the 1996 TV movie. BBC Books Unveils New Companion (May 22nd, 1998) 1999 sees the addition of a third member to the TARDIS crew. Joining the Eighth Doctor and Sam Jones is Fitz Kreiner, a 27 year-old from 1963 Earth. (Kreiner is pronounced KRY-ner; originally it was to be spelt Kriener until it was pointed out that the pronounciation would then be KREE-ner.) The son of a German fugitive from the Nazis, the resulting ostracisation Fitz felt while growing up in Windsor has left him solitary and cynical, the type of person who does not suffer fools gladly. Fitz is a musician and something of an actor, apt to play "roles" as they suit him. Disillusioned with a world he believes is flawed, Fitz sees travelling with the Doctor as a way of discovering better opportunities denied him on Earth in the 1960s. In his original biography sketch, editor Steve Cole describes Fitz as "combining Vila from Blake's 7 with Gerald Harper from Adam Adamant Lives! with a measure of Robert Carlyle thrown in for good measure!" Fitz joins the TARDIS crew in Mike Collier's The Taint in January. Perhaps unusually, Fitz was created for BBC Books by Rebecca Levene, who edited the Virgin line of Doctor Who novels for several years. BBC Books Hit North America (Apr. 26th, 1998) After months of waiting, fans in Canada and the United States have joined their counterparts in the rest of the world in receiving regular shipments of the new BBC Doctor Who novels. After lengthy negotiations, BBC Books has reached distrubtion agreements with London Bridge (in the US) and General Distributors (in Canada) which will see novels become available between one and two months behind the UK release dates, on par with Australia and New Zealand (who have had distribution deals in place for several months). And, contrary to previous reports, it appears that at least some bokstores are in fact putting all the BBC novels back to the original June 1997 releases on their shelves, as opposed to just the most recent ones. Changes In Store For New Adventures (May 26th, 1998) After a year which has seen the line survive the loss of its link to the TV series from which it was born, Virgin's New Adventures will undergo significant modifications to ensure its stability for the foreseeable future. For creative (rather than financial) reasons, the NAs will be switching to a bimonthly release schedule beginning with June's The Sword Of Forever. And, beginning in August is a trilogy of novels, culminating in the pivotal Where Angels Fear, co-written by former series editor Rebecca Levene and new editor Simon Winstone (Winstone has handled the day-to-day duties on the NAs since Oh No It Isn't! and has taken on additional responsibilities since then -- editing, for instance, Walking To Babylon; he fully takes over Levene's Senior Editor position with Another Girl, Another Planet when Levene leaves Virgin to pursue a job in television). The covers will also be redesigned, losing the "New Adventures" logo from the front (but maintaining the "NA" logo on the spine), in the hope that the series will become more marketable amongst general science-fiction readers in North America. With the book having been pushed back to February, presumably the audio release (originally slater for October) will also be delayed, though this has not been confirmed. * The release of The Mind Of Evil is in black and white, but includes five minutes of footage recolorised from the extant color American clip, added at the end of the tape. * A recent report suggested the 1996 FOX telefilm would be released on video in May, but this was denied by a Universal spokesperson. However, the MCA/Universal Video website does list a two-hour Doctor Who movie in their catalogue, but includes no other information, so it is impossible to confirm whether or not this is in reference to the telefilm, and if so, when it will be released. * Reeltime Pictures' Lust In Space sees Doctor Who put on trial as a sexist programme; the video stars Nicholas Courtney as the judge, Mark Strickson as the prosecutor, James Bree as the attroney for the defense, and Anneke Wills, Katy Manning, Louise Jameson, Sarah Sutton and Sophie Aldred as witnesses. * Briefly on the schedule was an audio collection of four Fourth Doctor stories narrated by Tom Baker (including three new stories plus a fourth drawn from Short Trips). However, this project has now been suspended, apparently as a result of conflicts with Baker. * En route for September are two audio tapes based on the first and third Bernice Summerfield-led New Adventures, Paul Cornell's Oh No It Isn't! (adapted by Jac Rayner) and Matt Jones' Beyond The Sun (adapted by the author). Unlike most audio versions of novels, these will not simply be narrations of the books, but will in fact be fully-fledged audio plays, with a full cast -- including Lisa Bowerman (Karra in Survival) as ... --- Platinum Xpress/Win/Wildcat5! v2.0 * Origin: Get Your Fido Fix Here. telnet://bbs.docsplace.org (1:3603/140)
