This is an occasional posting intended to introduce posters to the
Sheffield Liberal Democrat mailing list. The list is spam-free as only
members can post to it.

The SheffLDs mailing list is a mailing list for all members of the Liberal
Democrats who live within Sheffield or who have an interest in Sheffield
and who have email access, as well as all members of the Liberal Democrat
Group on Sheffield City Council.  You can discuss matters of local or
national policy, notify times of meetings, propose and discuss social
events, leafleting days, get-togethers, and generally be an informal
electronic discussion area.

Any Liberal Democrat member with some connection to Sheffield with a valid
email address can join the list.  To subscribe send a message to
SheffLDs-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. Include your name, which Local Party
you are a member of and what subscription email address you want used. The
list administrator will check that you are a member of the Liberal
Democrats, and add you to the mailing list.

Sending an email to SheffLDs@yahoogroups.com will post a message to the
list. All messages posted to the mailing list will be posted to all
subscribers with the prefix [SheffLDs] on the subject line.


Netiquette
----------
As with any social group there is a basic standard of behaviour expected
of group members. This is primarily intended to facilitate easy, relaxed
and fruitful discussion amongst members with a minimum of conflict and
strife. General advice includes:

* Don't post HTML messages.  This takes up a lot of bandwidth for very
  little useful gain.

* When replying to messages, only quote relevent sections of the message
  you are responding to.  Being forced to fetch huge messages where the
  whole of the original post is quotes and the only new material is "yes,
  me too!" will not win you very many friends.

* Replies go underneath the quoted material so the post can be read
  through an understood, not above.  Consider this dialogue:

 - Who's there?
 - Knock, knock.

See?

* Don't post binaries files.  This is a message list and binary
  attachments are removed. Upload them to a server and post a link to them
  instead.  Not everybody has a 115kbaud T10 ASDL connection and what may
  take half a second for you to send may take half an hour of expensive
  connection time for somebody else to fetch.


Other than that just being generally polite is a good rule of thumb. That
and enjoy yourself, the newsgroups are here for you to enjoy just as much
as anyone else.
