Hello all,
I'm looking for information on a curious variant of DDOS that's had me
guessing ever since I've had the machine. It gives its name as OPUS EDOS
0.4 and is "(C) Alan Williams 1984". Disc access is competently fast, the
interface clean and suited for terminals (DDOS had some full screen
displays for the utility commands, IIRC) and at version 0.4 it seems a
well coded, professional piece of firmware. The biggest difference is
that it reserves no private space, so on power up PAGE=&1700. The word
EDOS appears three times in the ROM, DDOS none. Sample dialogue and ROM
checksums are included below.
The disc controller is a WD2791 (another mystery chip) on an expansion
board in IC78, as in this picture:

The command set includes the Challenger extensions but not the DDOS ones
(*4080 and *DENSITY are absent, instead there are *OPT options.) Note the
*VOLGEN command is named *CATGEN here.
Not having found any mention of this filing system, I would be interested
to know how widespread EDOS was in the field. If anyone on this mailing
list was involved with designing or reviewing it, I'd also like to ask
what product it was derived from. My theory is that it is an early
release of DDOS under a working title; later, Challenger branched off from
it and then DDOS had its interface edited for usability. Am I correct?
Is EDOS a genuine Opus release?
