As I remember serveral Electron games did that sort of thing, you'd get a
small gameplay area in the centre of the screen surrounded by  moving shapes
which were where the game was storing stuff. In some games you could even
see game graphics there.  I remember being told (by the same sort of friend
that makes up corners in Overdrive) that one of my games had the map for the
game visible on the edge of screen if I could just see it...
